As a resident of a South Florida private community, access to the famous South Beach in Miami is quick and easy. South Beach, also nicknamed SoBe, is a neighborhood in the city of Miami Beach located due east of Miami city proper between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
This area was the first section to be developed, starting in the 1910’s. The area has gone through numerous artificial and natural changes over the years, including a booming regional economy and increased tourism. In the 1930’s an architectural revolution came to South Beach, bringing Art Deco, Streamline Moderne and Nautical Moderne architecture to the Beach.
South Beach has also been home to many movies such as Scarface and TV series (Miami Vice) since the 1980’s, with all of this starting when Jackie Gleason brought his weekly variety series, the Jackie Gleason Show to the area for taping in 1964. Natalie O’Neill of the Miami New Times said in 2009 “Until the 1980’s, Miami Beach was a peculiar mix of criminals, Cubans and little old ladies. Then the beautiful people moved in.”
Today, South Beach is a major entertainment destination with hundreds of nightclubs, restaurants, boutiques and hotels. The area is popular with American and international tourists. During nighttime, there is a vibrant and busy scene with many gastronomical and musical attractions, or simply people watching. Most residents of private communities in South Florida are no more than an hour away from South Beach and can easily enjoy all that the area has to offer.
